Mindy's drawing from 8/13

Livingroom_2 Staying / Living Room is 20" x 20", graphite and ink on Arches watercolor paper.

I was thinking of Carianne tracing her movement this year, and I chose to trace my process of staying and creating a home in a new place. I drew contours of the rag rug in my living room, which I made for the space, and happens to be the orange-red color that I saw in Cariann'es drawing. I am also thinking about shapes and intersections of layers of information; I painted the in-between spaces a darker neutral red. ...the graphite is very subtle - so take a closer look...

Carianne's Drawing from 8/11/07

Moving_3

"Moving, Summer 2007" 12 1/18 x 16 1/18", graphite and watercolor on Arches paper.

This drawing is a response to our last few about movement/stillness. Using an atlas, I drew some of the many paths I have continuously been moving along this summer; flight patterns, hiking trails, highways..., and let them overlap and intersect. Then the watercolor came in, carefully and slowly. I started with an amber color in response to Mindy's last drawing, then picked up a few more colors from the maps (reminiscent of our collaboration last year), and applied them intuitively within and around the shapes.

Mindy's drawings from 8/9/07

Floor1_2 Floor2_2

I traced two shadows - one of the my house's ironwork door, and another of the aspen leaves that filter into the house. One shadow is light and moving, the other dark and steady, and this is reflected in the density of the pencil. In response to Carianne's last drawings, I was thinking about layering of imagery and speed; her meticulous drawing with the quick action of the paint that maybe references the seaweed. Here, I reversed, and made the pencil drawing quickly, and slowed my speed to apply the ink. Floor 1 and Floor 2 are both 11.5" x 15", and are graphite and ink on Rives BFK.

I liked the contrast between the meticulous and detailed organic shapes and the quick straight drips...
